Thailand

Thailand begins in 2000 under Chuan Leekpai’s Democrat government, still working its way out of the 1997 Tom Yum Kung crisis that started in Bangkok and pulled much of Asia down with it. It is the only state in Southeast Asia never colonised, a constitutional monarchy where the palace, the army and the elected government have circled one another since 1932, and a treaty ally of the United States that trades heavily with China. The tree runs from that recovery through the Thaksin years, the coups, the Deep South insurgency and the 2020s protest wave.

Basic Information

Factories

Thailand starts with 41 factories: 33 Civilian Industries, 7 Military Industries, and 1 Naval Dockyard, spread across Isaan, Northern Thailand, Central Thailand, Southern Thailand, and Pattani.

Politics

Thailand starts democratic, with the Democrat Party in power under Chuan Leekpai. The 2001 election is the tree’s first fork: Thai Rak Thai’s rise is modelled as a national spirit that lifts the party month by month unless the player commits to another path first.

Focus Tree

The tree has 386 focuses. A shared economic and diplomatic trunk is open to any government, and five political paths branch from the 2000 start:

  • Thaksinist Populism — the Thai Rak Thai landslide, rural spending, and the coup risk that comes with it.
  • Royalist Establishment — the palace, the army and the network that outlasts elected governments.
  • Democrat Establishment — Chuan’s party holding the centre against the Thaksinite tide.
  • Reform Wave — the 2020s protest generation, unlocked later than the others.
  • Greater Thailand — an irredentist branch off the military tree, reached through the frontier focuses that grant the Greater Thailand mandate.

A communist entry, Ghosts of the Jungle, revives the CPT insurgency as a sixth route.

Mechanics

Deep South

The southern insurgency runs on an intensity meter that drives a tiered national spirit and a weekly incident chance. It opens through the Southern Question focus, or on its own in 2005 for players who never take it. The decisions let you answer with security operations, an autonomy framework, or a mix.

Coup Risk

Populist governments accumulate coup risk. It surfaces as a tiered national spirit and a defusable mission; ignore it and the tanks arrive at Government House.

The Kra Canal

The great cut at the Kra Isthmus is a three-phase funded construction project, each phase paid for in turn, with cost overruns and sabotage on contested ground.

Trade Diplomacy

A dynamic modifier scaled by Thailand’s signed trade agreements, deliberately weaker than Singapore’s equivalent, feeding a monthly tariff dividend.

Game Rules

  • Thailand (AI behaviour) — decides which road an AI Bangkok takes: Default establishment politics, Pan-Thai for the irredentist claims and ASEAN hegemony, SEATO Leader to build the regional pact, Alt-History for the communist path, or Random. It steers the AI only; every branch stays open to a human player.
